Using Virtual Backgrounds in Zoom

The virtual background feature allows you to display an image as your background during a Zoom Meeting. This feature works best with a green screen and uniform lighting, to allow Zoom to detect the difference between you and your background.

I made a Zoom video (using Zoom) how effective the virtual background feature can be if you were to use it to completely change your location, from that messy room you call your ‘Home Office’, or even the cupboard under the stairs where you are recording on your smartphone.

I can think of several uses for it:

  • Use a virtual background of your office during a LIVE broadcast, using Zoom as your web conferencing tool. You could then be anywhere in the world, rather than actually at your own desk during the broadcast.
  • Change the background to a classroom setting, so you are not actually at work, but want to remind your learners to complete an important assignment via a recorded video using Zoom.
  • During a LIVE broadcast, change your virtual background several times during your presentation to display different slides showing latest sales figures with graphics to make your point.
  • During a LIVE blended learning session, engage with learners via Zoom to show a series of questions as your virtual background. Ask for feedback, and then display the correct responses as another virtual background.

Let me know in the comments below how you think you would use the virtual background feature of Zoom.
